From May 28 to 30, Li Qun, Vice Minister of Culture and Tourism and Director of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, led a delegation of cultural relics from the Chinese government to visit Cyprus. Chinese Ambassador in Cyprus Liu Yantao accompanied to participate in related activities.
During the period in Cyprus, Li Qun met separately with the Cyprus Minister of Transportation, Communications and Engineering Vafyatis, the head of the Ministry of Culture Emmanuel, Minister of Tourism Koumis, on the Chinese Cypriot culture, cultural relics and tourism cooperation in the field of active exchange of views and reached a full consensus.
Li Qun pointed out that in this March, President Xi Jinping put forward the Global Civilization Initiative, which provides a Chinese solution for promoting exchanges and mutual understanding among civilizations and the progress of human civilization. China and Cyprus are both ancient civilizations with rich cultural, heritage and tourism cooperation, and China is willing to work with Cyprus to implement the Global Civilization Initiative and strengthen exchanges and mutual understanding between the two civilizations. Li Qun said that China will further strengthen institutional cooperation with Cyprus, implement and promote the signed and pending agreements, and promote new cooperation between the two sides in the fields of cultural relics protection and restoration, underwater archaeology, museum exchanges, cultural relics exhibitions, the recovery and return of lost cultural relics, and the protection of cultural heritage in conflict areas.
Li Qun highlighted the first General Assembly of the Asian Cultural Heritage Conservation Union to Cyprus. He said that President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory letter to the General Assembly, stressing China's willingness to work with other countries to actively promote international cooperation in the field of cultural heritage, to promote mutual understanding and affinity among people of all countries, and to jointly promote the development and progress of human civilization. Li Qun, on behalf of the presidency of the Asian Cultural Heritage Conservation Union, invited Cyprus to join the Union.
The heads of culture, cultural relics and tourism departments of Cyprus unanimously agreed that the cultural heritage exchanges and cooperation between China and Cyprus have a deep foundation and a bright future. Cyprus is willing to work with China to release the full potential of cultural heritage cooperation between the two countries, coordinate their positions in international multilateral cooperation mechanisms, and continue to carry out cooperation in the recovery and return of lost cultural relics.
