Terracotta Warriors in New Zealand National Museum

On December 13th, the New Zealand National Museum formally announced the opening of the exhibition of “Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality” in Wellington as China-New Zealand Tourism Year is around the corner.

“Terracotta Warriors, one of the eight world wonders, is the representative of Chinese ancient civilization. It is also a dialogue transcending time and space between Chinese ancient civilization and people of New Zealand, as well as the best preface of China-New Zealand Tourism Year.”said Chinese Ambassador to New Zealand Wu Xi in his opening remarks. 

“Compared w2ith bilateral cooperation in economy and trade, the exhibition of Terracotta Warriors, as the media of cultural exchanges, serves as an effective method of strengthening communications and enhancing mutual understanding and trust.” said Kelvin Davis from the Ministry of Tourism of New Zealand, adding that this exhibition will attract more New Zealanders to know China.  

Rebecca Rice, who was in charge of this exhibition, described it as one’s once-in-a-lifetime experience, noting that it will surprise New Zealanders. 

Zhang Yan, vice president of Emperor Qinshihuang’s Mausoleum Site Museum, said this exhibition features highly professional levels in that it is not for presenting cultural relics but to show the running time line through enough space, and raise questions for audience who will find answers at exhibition after consideration.

Coordinated by Shaan Xi Provincial Cultural Heritage Administration, the exhibits, including eight warriors, two horses from the famous terracotta army, as well as two duplicated bronze carriages and more than one hundred and sixty jade and bronze wares unearthed from West Zhou Dynasty to Han Dynasty, were selected from more than 20 museums, 

It is said that the exhibition of “Terracotta Warriors: Guardians of Immortality”, which will endure until April 22nd, 2019, is the first foreign exhibition in brand new artistic hall of New Zealand National Museum. Chinese Terracotta Warriors have previously been exhibited in 1986 and 2003 in New Zealand.
