Recently, invited by the Ministry of Culture of Thailand, the Chinese Cultural Center in Bangkok, and the Thai Teochew Opera Association, Shantou City, Guangdong Province, with performers from Guangdong Teochew Theater Troupe, held the “Teochew Opera in Thailand” performance in Bangkok. These activities aimed to commemorate the 48th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Thailand, and promote cultural exchanges and mutual learning between China and Thailand.

The five consecutive nights of Teochew opera performances got major heat among the people in Bangkok, and more than 1000 audiences crowded into the auditorium every day. The performance repertoire, with both traditional classics and new masterpieces, not only spread and promoted the excellent traditional culture of Chaoshan, but also consolidated the people-to-people bonds between Chaoshan and Thailand.

As a Chinese poem says, one simple sentence can connect two hearts, so we don’t need to use a thousand words to express our feelings. At the Jiao Peng Association Auditorium in Bangkok, the melodious singing of Lin Yanyun, winner of the Plum Performance Award, attracted the attention of the audience as soon as she started. The opening play “Li Shangyi”, performed by more than a dozen national first-class actors including Lin Yanyun and many outstanding young actors, was extremely vivid and exciting. The exquisite Teochew opera hairstyles, various opera robes, traditional erhu and suona, exquisite props and wonderful performances won bursts of applause from overseas Chinese from Chaoshan and local audiences. There were subtitles in Chinese and Thai languages on both sides of the stage, which enabled local Thai people to enjoy the show.

Splendid performances of “Li Shangyin”, “Embroidered Tiger”, “A Lady Named Gold Flower”, “Chen San Wu Niang” and special opera highlights enabled the people to enjoy the Teochew opera in their hometown easily without going back. According to the Thailand’s Sing Sian Yer Pao Daily News, the Guangdong Teochew Theater brought great pleasure to the audience here. During the event, many overseas Chinese in Thailand as well as local people in Bangkok came to experience the unique charm of Chinese opera. More than 1000 audiences came to the Jiao Peng Association Auditorium to watch the performance every night.

Chen Yingling, an overseas Chinese in Thailand, watched the performance live. She said that her favorite play was the “Embroidered Tiger”, which was a newly arranged historical Teochew opera that tells the story of the interwoven conflict between the political intrigues and brother affection of Cao Pi and Cao Zhi during the Three Kingdoms period of ancient China. She said that being able to see the performance of China’s top Teochew opera troupe in a foreign country brought her great relief from my homesickness.

Mr. Cai, a Thai Chinese living with his parents and grandparents in Thailand, was a fan of the costumes, props and music of Teochew opera. Although he barely understood Mandarin and Teochew dialect, he knew that his grandparents and parents are all fond of Teochew operas. This time the whole family came together to watch the performance. He looked forward to seeing more exciting Teochew opera performances in the future.

There is a proverb in Chaoshan that if you have nothing to eat, you will go to Siam. The Chaoshan people’s migration to Thailand can be traced back to the Southern Song Dynasty. Teochew opera has also taken root all over the world with those Chaoshan people, becoming one of the most influential Chinese operas overseas.

Chen Yingling was born in the Chaoshan. She said that Chaoshan people have been exposed to opera since their childhood. When they are at home, the old will listen to and watch Teochew operas on the radio or TV. When they hang out during festivals, they will stop to listen to Teochew operas as they pass by the stage set up. She said that the stories of traditional Teochew operas are mostly based on the basic structure. The characters will go through all kinds of hardships, and at last there will be a happy ending. In Chaoshan culture, there is an emphasis on “what goes around comes around”, which is highly consistent with the content of Chaoshan opera. Over the years, inspired and moved by the Teochew opera, she has overcome all the obstacles in starting her own business overseas.

Korn Dabbaransi, former deputy prime minister of Thailand and president of the Thailand-China Friendship Association, said that China and Thailand were as close as one family. The cultural exchange between Guangdong Chaozhou Theater and Bangkok has lifted our relations to a new level. Xie Guomin, senior chairman of Thailand’s Charoen Pokphand Group, said that Teochew opera set a cultural bridge for overseas Chaoshan people to remember their affection to homeland and trace their roots, and played a positive role in foreign cultural exchanges.

Zhuang Meilong, director of the Thai Teochew Opera Heritage Center Committee and a Thai-Chinese, upholds the localization of Teochew opera in Thailand. He said in an interview that if Thai audience wanted to better understand the content of Teochew opera, language barriers must be eliminated. Therefore, he tried to integrate Teochew opera and Thai and perform artistic choreography to form a new opera style called “Youtai Opera”, which means “Chinese opera sung in Thai” in Thai. Recently, Zhuang Meilong has come up with a new idea: to use “Youtai Opera” to interpret Thai folk tales so as to attract more Thai audience to understand Teochew operas.

Huang Yeguang, chairman of the Thai Teochew Opera Association, has also been committed to promoting Teochew opera in Thailand. It was his repeated invitations that contributed to the full success of this overseas performance of the Teochew Opera Troupe. He said that this performance not only further spread Teochew opera in Thailand and spread the excellent traditional culture of Chaoshan, but also deepened people-to-people exchanges and fostered the friendly ties between the two peoples.

After the performances, Chen Yingling uploaded videos of the performance to many major platforms. She wants to attract more people to pay attention to Chaozhou opera through these short videos, so that friends from all over the world can appreciate the excellent traditional culture of Chaoshan.
