From November 24 to 25, the 7th “Silk Road Cup” Chinese Language and Culture Contest for Universities in Northeast Thailand was held in Mahasarakham University, Thailand. The event was hosted by the Consulate General of the People’s Republic of China in Khon Kaen, guided by the Confucius Institute (Classroom) Development Alliance of Thailand, and co-hosted by the Confucius Institute at Mahasarakham University and the Confucius Institute at Khon Kaen University.
Under the theme of “Countries Along the Belt and Road are family, sharing Chinese language and culture”, the contest attracted more than 300 teachers and students from 15 institutions including 13 universities in Northeast Thailand, University of Al Azhar Indonesia, and National University of Laos.
The 7th “Silk Road Cup” Chinese Language and Culture Contest for Universities in Northeast Thailand was kicked off with the original song Long Live the China-Thailand Friendship. In his speech, the deputy Governor of the Maha Sarakham, Yimrewat, stressed Maha Sarakham as an education center and the important role of Confucius Institutes in promoting educational and cultural exchanges between Thailand and China.
Liu Hongmei, Chinese Consul General in Khon Kaen, said in her speech that Chinese culture has a rich history and encouraged Thai youth to have a deep understanding of Chinese culture and become participants and promotors of the political, economic, cultural and scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries.
The competition covers the history of Sino-Thai exchanges, China’s national conditions and cultural knowledge, Chinese talent and Chinese classics reading, including knowledge competition, classic recitation and talent performance. The knowledge contest challenged the players' mental agility and examined their use of language. In the classic recitation section, the contestants presented literary classics with full emotions. In the talent show, the contestants showed a variety of artistic talents, with unique creativity and exquisite skills, for the audience to send an amazing talent feast.
In the end, the team from Mahasarakham University won the first prize, and the team from National University of Lao” competition provides a platform for teachers, students and Chinese language lovers from Northeast Thailand to showcase their talents. The contestants demonstrate their disciplinary knowledge, deep understanding of Chinese culture and proficient use of the language.
