Wuxi , or Xi in short, is known as the "Bright Pearl of Taihu Lake". Located in southern Jiangsu Province in the Yangtze River Delta, it is dubbed “Little Shanghai” because of its highly developed economy. It is the transport hub around Taihu Lake, which borders Yangtze River in the North, Taihu Lake in the South, Xishan and Huishan Mountain in the west with Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal passing through the city. Moreover, it is also a hub in southern Jiangsu Province that borders Changzhou and Nanjing to the west and Suzhou to the east, only 128.2 kms away from Shanghai; the northern half looks across to Taizhou across theYangtze River, while the southern half also borders the province of Zhejiang to the south. Wuxi is a famous national historical and cultural city and one of China 's most economically developed cities. With rich industrial and landscape tourism resources, it is an advanced manufacturing base in the Yangtze River Delta, a base for outsourcing and creative design, a regional logistics center, a vocational education center and a tourism resort center. It was named by Fortune magazine (Chinese version) as the "Best Business City in China." On 2 January 2004, it was selected by CCTV as one of China’s Top Ten Economically Dynamic cities," and listed in Forbes China as the best business city for many consecutive years. Two county-level cities under its jurisdiction, namely Jiangyin and Yixing, are among the top 100 county-level cities in China in terms of economic strength, including Huaxi Village in Jiangyin, known as the Unparalleled Village under Heaven. In the listings of China’s Relatively Affluent Regions, Wuxi is ranked the 5th.

As a famous historical and cultural city in China, Wuxi is located near Taihu Lake with beautiful scenery and time-honored history. It is a bright pearl in Taihu Lake that is incubated by misty rain in the southern reaches of Yangtze River. “The most picturesque part of Taihu Lake lies in Yuantouzhu”, wrote Guo Moruo, a great poet, which is a vivid description of Wuxi’s landscape.

Resource-rich Wuxi is China's famous land of fish and rice with abundant cultural relics. Since Ming Dynasty, it is famous as “the Port of Cloth, Money, and Kiln, the Hometown of Silk and the Rice Market". Wuxi is the cradle of China's national industry, township enterprises, and the so-called Southern Jiangsu Economic Model. It is home to China's private enterprises and is also a prosperous modern city. Wuxi’s business has radiated to the whole province. In addition, it boasts beautiful scenery, making it one of China's excellent tourism cities, a national sanitary, forest and garden city. Wuxi’s excellent basic education makes it the cradle of professors, fellows of Chinese Academy of Sciences and presidents of colleges and universities.

Wuxi is a major economically powerful city in East China, a manufacturing base, an industrial city, the hometown of China's private enterprises and one of China's excellent tourist cities, listed by Forbes as the best commercial city in China. In 2012 Wuxi’s economy grew both in quantity and quality. Its GDP exceeded RMB 700 billion to nearly RMB 800 billion, up by 10.1% or RMB 68.8 billion. Its per capita GDP totaled RMB 117,400, a net increase by RMB 10,000 compared to 2011, or US$ 18,700, which ranks the first in Jiangsu province.

Wuxi, the Bright Pearl of Taihu Lake, boasts abundant cultural heritages, unique tourism resources, sound ecological environment, excellent geographic conditions and strong economic foundation, all of which will further promote Wuxi’s city influence.
