Changshu , or Yu in short, is named after “good harvest year by year”. With a time-honored history, Changshu has always been a resource-rich and culturally prosperous place, known as "a land flowing with milk and honey in southern Yangtze Delta". It is one of the cradles of Wu Culture, a famous historical and cultural city in China, the top 100 county-level city, a national sanitary city, a national model city in comprehensive environmental control, the national advanced landscaping city, an excellent tourism destination, the hometown of Chinese Guchin and an international garden city.
Located in the Yangtze River Delta region, Changshu sits in the southeast of Jiangsu Province. It borders Shanghai, 100 km to the east and Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province, 217 km to the west. It is now under the jurisdiction of Suzhou City.
Changshu is an ancient and bright pearl embedded in the southern reaches of the Yangtze River. As a historically and culturally famous city, Changshu is known for its long history, beautiful scenery and prosperity.
Changshu is famous for its numerous brilliant talents who over hundreds of years have made great contributions in various areas to the progress of human civilization, such as Yan Tianchi, the founder of Yushan school of Pipa, ZhongYong, the forefather of Wu culture, Liu Rushi, one of the eight most talented women between late Ming dynasty and early Qing Dynasty, Wang Hui, a great painter, and Qian Qianyi, a literary leader in early Qing Dynasties. Those statesmen, litterateurs and artists recorded splendid chapters in the history of Changshu.
Changshu is also one of the top county-level cities in China in terms of comprehensive strength and a regional economic, cultural, financial, commercial, convention and shipping center. It is a member of Coordinated Development Group of Regional Economically Powerful Cities. The 2010 per capita GDP exceeds US$ 20,000, more than that of Portugual. Situated around such major cities as Shanghai, Suzhou and Wuxi, Changshu boasts unique geographical advantages, which would further improve its city influence.
