12th Xiangshan Tourism Summit Held in Wellington

The 12th Xiangshan Tourism Summit, co-organized by the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCC) and the City of Wellington, New Zealand, was held in Wellington from the 22nd to the 23rd, with the theme of the Summit being "Sustainable Urban Tourism: Innovation and Deepening".

The World Tourism Economic Trends Report (2024) released by the Summit predicts that total global tourism arrivals will reach 13.579 billion in 2024, recovering to 103.9% of the 2019 level, and total global tourism revenues will reach US$5.8 trillion, reaching 139.6% of the 2019 level.

Sima Hong, Executive Vice-Chairman of the WTCC Board and Vice Mayor of Beijing, called on members to deepen engagement and cooperation in the culture and tourism industry, unswervingly uphold the concept of green development, as well as utilize technological empowerment to enhance the tourism experience, maintain the stability and prosperity of the tourism industry, and make every effort to promote the sustainable development of the tourism industry and achieve the harmonious unification of the economy, society and the environment.

Wellington Mayor Tori Warnow said that promoting sustainable tourism through eco-friendly infrastructure construction can protect the fragile ecosystems, historical landmarks and aboriginal cultures of tourist cities from the negative impacts of tourism overload, and realize the development that promotes economic growth and protects the ecological environment at the same time.

Yang Shuo, secretary general of the World Tourism Cities Federation, said the application of science and technology innovations in the tourism industry provides tourists with intelligent, personalized and comfortable experiences. It is expected that technological means will be innovatively applied in the construction of tourism cities and the creation of attractions, so that technological tourism products will become a new growth point for tourism development in the future.

The summit attracted nearly 400 government officials, representatives of international tourism organizations, industry leaders, experts and scholars from about 40 countries and regions.
