From September 7 to 8, the 14th China-Japan-South Korea Culture Ministers' Meeting was held in Jeonju, South Korea, which is the 2023 "Cultural Capital of East Asia". Hu Heping, Minister of Culture and Tourism of China, Park Pu-kyun, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea, and Katsuko Nagaoka, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan, attended the meeting and delivered keynote speeches together.
At the meeting, the ministers of the three countries summarized the results achieved since the 13th China-Japan-South Korea Culture Ministers' Meeting, and focused on strengthening the humanistic exchanges among the youth of the three countries, promoting the cooperation of the "East Asian Cultural Capitals", upgrading the level of public cultural exchanges, deepening the joint development of the cultural industry and promoting the protection of cultural heritage to carry out in-depth discussions, and reached a wide range of consensus.
Hu Heping pointed out in his speech that China, Japan and South Korea are geographically close to each other, economically intertwined and humanistically connected, and that since the establishment of the mechanism of China-Japan-South Korea Culture Ministers' Meetings, they have always adhered to the spirit of advancing dialogue and cooperation in East Asia, and have built bridges and ties to promote exchanges, enhance mutual trust, and deepen friendship by taking culture as a carrier, thus becoming an important subregional cooperation mechanism for the development and progress of the region, Asia and even the world. We should grasp the trend of the times and respond to people's expectations, enhance trust in cultural exchanges, eliminate differences in mutual understanding of civilizations, and create a common future through win-win cooperation. In this regard, Hu put forward five suggestions: first, to jointly build the brand of "East Asian Cultural Capital"; second, to share the responsibility of cultural heritage protection; third, to share the opportunities of industrial development in the digital era; fourth, to build a broad platform for public opinion; and fifth, to jointly implement the global civilization initiative.
The ministers of Japan and South Korea said that since the organization of China-Japan-Republic of Korea Culture Ministers' Meeting, the three countries have actively cooperated and solidly pushed forward the implementation of the results of the meeting, and carried out a series of cultural exchanges with rich contents, diversified forms and remarkable effects, which have played a positive role in enhancing the mutual understanding and friendly feelings among people of the three countries. The ministers of Japan and South Korea also expressed their views on strengthening institutional cooperation among cultural institutions, organizing China-Japan-South Korea art festivals on a regular basis, and deepening the integration of sports with culture and tourism, as well as other initiatives to expand China-Japan-South Korea cultural exchanges and deepen practical cooperation.
After the meeting, the ministers of the three countries jointly signed the outcome document The 14th China-Japan-Korea Culture Ministers' Meeting 2023 Jeonju Declaration, and awarded the commemorative plaques of "East Asian Cultural Capital" in 2024 to Weifang and Dalian, China, Gimhae, South Korea, and Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan respectively.
