With a history of more than five thousand years, the Chinese civilization has been advocating values of peace, neighborliness and harmony. In key remarks made by General Secretary Xi Jinping on the symposium of inheriting and developing culture, the prominent feature of peace was listed as one out of five prominent features of the Chinese civilization. The feature offers us an instruction of learning the history of the Chinese civilization at a broader and deeper level and jointly create a new culture for a new era. China was once one of the most powerful countries in the world with no records of colonization or invasion of other countries. Keeping to the development path of peace today is one of the approaches to inheriting and promoting cultural traditions of the Chinese nation such as peace, neighborliness and harmony.

From pursuing “people from around the world are of one family” to promoting the establishment of a community with a shared future for mankind, China has been the promoter of world peace. As General Secretary Xi Jinping mentioned in 2021 speech for New Year celebration, China is not alone in its development as people from around the world are of one family. Braving the winds and waves throughout the past year, we now understand more than ever the meanings of building the community with a shared future for mankind. “People from around the world are of one family” is an important part of fine traditional Chinese culture, emphasizing on harmoniously getting alone with each other regardless of nationality. To build the community with a shared future for mankind, destinies of all countries and nations should be intertwined, meaning that we should stand together through thick and thin to build the world where we were all born and raised into a harmonious big family. Standing at the crossroad of the history once again, the human society is confronted with unprecedented challenges. Faced with questions of “where do we go and how do we develop our society”, General Secretary Xi Jinping provided the answer which is the philosophy of building a community with a shared future for mankind. In this way, China offered its solutions to building a better world and advancing shared benefits, rights and responsibilities for countries of different social systems, ideologies, cultures and developing levels, which will ultimately build a better world by maximizing common grounds. The philosophy of building the community with a shared future for mankind inherited from “people from around the world are of one family”, one of the views of the world, and updated and developed it at the same time. The philosophy has become a distinct indicator leading the times and pointing out the direction of human civilization progress.

From pursuing “people from around the world are of one family” to striving for the common good for the world, China has been the contributor of global development. As pointed out by General Secretary Xi Jinping, everything we did was to seek happiness for the Chinese people, to rejuvenate the Chinese nation and to strive for the common good for the world. China’s contribution rate to the world economy reached 38.6% on average from 2013 to 2021. Meanwhile, China delivered international obligations earnestly and took initiative to assist foreign countries. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we launched an humanitarian emergency assistance program that covered the broadest areas and responded in the quickest manner since the founding of the Republic of China, which continuously promoting the prevention and control of the global pandemic. Furthermore, China stepped up efforts to provide more public goods for the international community as always and repaid the kindness it received from the global community. The Belt and Road Initiative jointly built by different countries became a popular international public product and a platform for international collaboration which boosted economic development of various countries and improved people’s livelihood. The vision of“people from around the world are of one family” has been delivered through a pursuit of striving for the common good for the world. China injected a powerful impetus to the world’s development as it developed rapidly and proactively made contributions to global development.

From pursuing “peace among all nations” to establishing new international relations on the basis of win-win cooperation, China has been the defender of international order. As General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out, Chinese people valued harmony and peace among all nations, which means that all countries get along with each other harmoniously. “Peace among all nations” is an important element of the Chinese harmonious culture. Secretary General Xi applied this notion to international relations at present and proposed the idea of establishing new international relations based on win-win cooperation. He also pointed out that we should inherit and promote purposes and principles of the United Nations, as set forth in its Charter, establish a new type of international relations build up on win-win cooperation and build the community with a shared future for mankind. As a defender of international order, China firmly uphold the international system with the UN at its core, the international order based on international law and fundamental guidelines of international relations driven by purposes and principles stated in the Charter. We need to hold high the banner of peace, development, cooperation and win-win results, foster amicable cooperation with other countries, uphold the principles of mutual respect, justice and integrity and win-win cooperation and make global governance more just and sound.

Proved by its history and practices, China boasts a civilization prominently featuring peace, which decided that China was, and will always be a builder of world peace, a contributor of global development and a defender of international relations; that China will stay committed to advancing cultural exchanges and mutual learning instead of cultural hegemony; that China will not indoctrinate other countries with its values and political system; that China will choose cooperation over confrontation and it will never ally with countries alike or exclude those different from it.
