On December 11th of 2020, Zheng Zeguang, vice foreign minister, went to Chile Embassy in China to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diplomatic relationship at the invitation of Chile.
In his speech, Zheng Zeguang spoke highly of the historic development of China-Chile tie of the last 50 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relationship. He said that Chile was the first country in Latin America to establish diplomatic relationship with China. Since that, political mutual trust had been enhanced, practical cooperation expanded and people-to-people cooperation increased, so China-Chile tie was an example of China’s cooperation with Latin America and Caribbean States. In the February of this month, president Xi Jinping and president Piñera talked on the phone and sent letters to each others to exchange ideas to enhance cooperation to fight against the pandemic, which set a direction for our relationship. China would like to work hand in hand with Chile to implement important consensus reached by heads of countries; fight against the pandemic; expand areas for practical cooperation including economy, trade and infrastructure construction; link strategies; safeguard free trade and multilateralism to develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between our countries.
Luis Schmidt Montes, Chile’s ambassador to China, said in his speech that in the 50 years since the establishment of the diplomatic relationship, China-Chile tie had been mature and developed which could be proved by close high-level communication and abundant cooperation results. Chile officials expressed their gratitude towards precious support and help of China. There was great potential and prospect of our cooperation. Chile was willing to deepen it’s cooperation with China in terms of Covid-19 prevention, economy, trade, astronomy, science, technology and people-to-people communication, so as to enhance multilateral cooperation and achieve common development.
