The Sixth Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls' Day and Women’s Development is held in Beijing
“Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls' Day and Women’s Development, one of activities of the Sixth Qiqiao Girls’ Day in Longnan was held in Beijing on August 1, 2014. This international forum was co-hosted by Department of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Ministry of Culture, China Federation of Literary and Art Circles (CFLAC), Publicity Department of CPC Gansu Provincial Committee, Gansu Provincial Department of Culture, Gansu Provincial Bureau of Tourism, Gansu Provincial Office of Foreign Affairs, Gansu Art and Literary Association, Gansu Women’s Federation, Gansu Folk Literature and Art Society, Longnan Municipal Party of CPC and Municipal People’s Government of Longnan, and co-organized by Xihe County Party of CPC, People’s Government of Xihe County, and Cultural Exchange Organization of Presenting China to the World. The forum consists of the opening ceremony, panel discussion, award presentation and the closing ceremony.
The Sixth Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls' Day and Women’s Development is hosted by Lian Ji, Member of the Standing Committee of Gansu Provincial Committee, Director of Publicity Department of Gansu Province. Sun Xuetao, Secretary of the CPC Longnan Municipal Committee, Zhang Bing, Deputy Director of Intangible Cultural Heritage Department in Ministry of Culture, Uzma Noorani, Special Representative of National Commission on the Status of Women, H.E. Mrs. Cecília Szilas, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Hungary, Yu Hongqiu, Vice Chairman of All-China Women’s Federation and other leaders delivered speeches respectively. Wang Zhizhen, Vice Chairman of the 11th CPPCC made an important speech. Chen Qing, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Longnan Municipal Committee, Mayor of Municipal People’s Government of Longnan, Zhang Fang, Member of the Standing Committee of Municipal Party Committee of Longnan, Director of Publicity Department of Longnan, Cui Zhenkang, Deputy Secretary General of Municipal People’s Government of Longnan, Director of Foreign Affairs Office, Zhou Lijun, Deputy Director of Publicity Department of Longnan, Bai Yang, Director of Longnan Municipal Bureau of Tourism, Zhou Ziqiang, Party Secretary of Xihe County, Hao Ailong, Governor of Xihe County, He Nengxiong, Director of Publicity Department of Xihe County, Xu Tong, Deputy Governor of Xihe County and other leaders in Gansu Province together with a number of media attended this forum.
Before the ceremony, leaders, experts and scholars present on the forum watched photography and video exhibition including animation, documentary on Qiqiao, the beautiful scenery, folklore culture, Qiqiao Culture and women’s development in Longnan, visited exhibition on e-commerce, as well as the demonstration of Qiqiao cultural products, such as craftsmanship of jute paper, embroidery, paper-cutting and jute paper painting.
Qiqiao Culture is known as a fragrant flower among the blooming blossom of Chinese cultural resources. It derives and spreads from Xihe County and Li County in Longnan, proving to be an ancient custom from the Qin Dynasty. The festival begins in the eve of the first day of the seventh month of lunar calendar and ends at the night of the seventh day of July, lasting seven days and eight nights. The devout girls will attend a grand rituals and worship the incarnation of the Queen of Skills. Everyone hopes the Queen can grant her wisdom, ingenuity and a good marriage. This festival is the one and the only one in China with such large scale, rich content, long duration, great number of participation and the unity of event. It enjoys festive atmosphere, amazing imagination and good aspiration, living up to its fame as the “living fossil” of ancient Qiqiao Custom in China.
Located at the triple intersection of Shaanxi, Gansu and Sichuan Province, Longnan has the reputation as “the must access to Shaanxi and Gansu Province, the throat land of Sichuan Province and Chongqing, Jiangnan (the south or lower reaches of the Yangtze River) in Gansu Province”. As early as the New Stone Age over seven thousand years ago, people has lived in this place. Longnan is the birthplace of Fuxi, the first ancestor of Han People, the birth site of the Qin Empire and the cradle of Qin Culture. On the basis of much stable research, the folklore experts agree that Qiqiao Culture derives and spreads from Xihe County and Li County in Longnan, it is an ancient custom left from the Qin Dynasty. It became more and more popular as the growing prosperity of Qin Dynasty, and gradually, gained popularity in the whole country and the whole Chinese culture area, enjoying a long history of more than 2,000 years. Since the major participants of this festival are un-married girls, this festival is also called “Girls’ Day”, being as the most romantic festival among traditional Chinese festivals.
The keynote speech was hosted by Yuan Li, Researcher of China National Academy of Arts, Doctoral tutor. Zhao Kuifu, professor of Northwest Normal University, Liu Yeyuan, professor of Communication University of China and Zamira Akbagysheva, President of the Congress of Women of the Kyrgyz Republic made keynote speeches respectively. In the afternoon, a series of activities in Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls’ Day and Women’s Development were held. Representatives of international women organizations and domestic folklore experts conducted academic discussion in two groups. After the discussion, Gu Xiulian, Vice Chairman of National People’s Congress of China, Director of China National Committee for the Well Being of the Youth attended the “Awarding Ceremony of Top Ten Female Entrepreneurs on E-commerce in Longnan”, and presented the awards to the representatives of outstanding female entrepreneurs on e-commerce.
On the closing ceremony of Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls' Day and Women’s Development, Foreign Ambassadors in China were awarded trophies of “China (Longnan) Global Image Ambassador for Qiqiao Culture”; Representatives of international women organizations were awarded trophies of “China (Longnan) Global Spokesperson for Qiqiao Culture”.
The host of Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls' Day and Women’s Development explained the achievement of the group discussion and made a conclusion; Yuan Li, researcher of China National Academy of Arts, doctoral tutor summarized the fruits of the forum; Chen Qing, Deputy Secretary of Longnan Municipality, Mayor of Municipal People’s Government of Longnan delivered an acceptance speech to Longnan International Forum on Qiqiao Girls' Day and Women’s Development.
Qiqiao Culture combines worshiping, singing and dancing, writing poems, art performances together, during which girls learn from each other about the labor skills. Qiqiao Festival proves to be a comprehensive annual festival. This festival is the one and the only one in China with such large scale, rich content, long duration, great number of participation and the unity of event. It enjoys festive atmosphere, amazing imagination and good aspiration, living up to its fame as the “living fossil” of ancient Qiqiao Custom in China. The theme of the forum is “China Dream--Girls’ Dream”. China Dream is a country’s dream and a nation’s dream and also a dream for millions of women. The dream could not be realized without the active participation and positive efforts of women everywhere. Promoting Qiqiao Culture is not only do good to the traditional virtues of Chinese women, that is being hard-working and virtuous, sincere and honest and longing for the happiness, it is also in favor of overcoming bad phenomenons as indolence, pursuing luxuries and being decadent, most importantly, it would advocate women empowerment and gender equality, fully motivate women’s energetic, positive and creative power so that we could make joint efforts in realizing the great rejuvenation of Chinese nation, the China Dream.
