On March 11th, Jiaodong Folk Window Paper-cutting Art Exhibition made it first debut in the University of Leeds with many European people being attracted by distinctive traditional folk paper-cuts.
In terms of content, dozens of window paper-cuts selected for this exhibition comprise not only traditional artworks with Jiaodong elements but also modern paper-cuts reflecting the landscapes and city’s culture within Jiaodong area. They have both ornamental and study value.
After the shows in the University of Leeds and Great Yarmouth, it will be exhibited in Miskoic and Angers respectively.
Jiaodong paper-cutting, with a long history of hundreds years, features steady and flowing lines, and dense arrangement. There are dozens of paper-cuts covering decorations for doors, lanterns, windows, hats, clothes and shoes. One of the most unique characteristics of Jiaodong window paper cutting is its story-telling function since it draws on new year paintings, illustrations, Chinese paintings and wood carvings. As the representative of Jiaodong paper-cutting, Yantai paper-cutting was listed as the first array of national intangible cultural heritage in 2008.
