On September 28th, the Eighth Kubuqi International Desert Forum was held. The theme was “carbon peak·carbon neutrality, jointly build a community for human and natural lives”. During the forum, ambassadors to China from 7 countries put forward a “carbon neutrality initiative”.

Xi Jinping attended the 75th Session of the United Nations General Assembly and delivered an important speech in which he put forward an initiative of global development to jointly cope with global threats and challenges and to construct a community for human with a shared future. It led to strong response and high-level comment of the international society. António Guterres, the secretary general of the UN, said that climate change was a crisis faced by the international society, so we needed to cooperate to realize the goal of “carbon neutrality”. Currently, more and more countries saw low carbon and ecological economy as a strategic move and China brought up the goal for “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality” and took effective measures, so as to realize the former in 2030 and the latter in 2060.

The Eighth Kubuqi International Desert Forum gathered wisdom from all sides, discussed the prevention and control of the global desertification, offered help to realize “carbon peak” and “carbon neutrality” and built a community for human and nature. The “carbon neutrality initiative” was brought up by Antonia Hugh, Jamaica ambassador to China, Dusan Bella, Slovakia ambassador to China, Robert Sterling Quant, Bahamas ambassador to China, Antonios Toumazis, Cyprus ambassador to China, Rahamtalla M. Osman, African Union ambassador to China, Lechoo Setenane, Lesotho ambassador to China, and Rodrigo Delgado Soto, Costa Rica ambassador to China. They advocated the international community to take measures to develop clean energy, to prevent desertification, to protect biodiversity and to jointly cope with climate change.

Rodrigo Delgado Soto, Costa Rica ambassador to China, read the “Carbon Neutrality Initiative” on behalf ambassadors from 7 countries. The main content was the following:

First, we needed to realize that the earth was our only common home. We needed to create a future of zero-carbon. We also needed to know an important topic that biodiversity required joint protection. Besides, zero-carbon society would define future and was a challenge for all human.

Second, we also realized that China was a leader in the prevention and control of the desertification and there had been great progress in such aspect of the international community.

Third, Chinese government had established relating targets to realize “carbon peak” before 2030 and “carbon neutrality” before 2060. We hoped to work with China to fulfill the UN 2030 sustainable development goal.

Forth, we advocate that no matter what social, economic and environmental levels countries were at, the international society should contribute to “carbon neutrality”, so every interest-related party needed to offer suggestion. We hoped that people could work together to build an inclusive, low-carbon and sustainable society.
