In the evening of February 24th, the nine-day activities of China Cultural Week came to its end in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Local residents and tourists were amazed by the different daily Chinese elements including dumplings, sweet dumplings, paper-cutting, tea ceremony, calligraphy, ink wash paintings, Guzheng (Chinese zither) and Cheongsam (Chinese woman’s dress).
The Cheongsam show of the Southern of Jiangnan had been staged in the evening of February 24th accompanied by magnificent Chinese music. The audience couldn’t help applauding and cheering when the temporary actress who dressed in Chinese Cheongsam were walking on the stage with oil-paper umbrellas, fans, and books in their hands .
In the opening day of China Cultural Week, Cheng Xueyuan, China's ambassador to Sri Lanka, wrote a giant “Fu”, a Chinese character meaning fortune and luck, and sent it to local people personally. He also delivered a speech about “Fu” culture.
There were not only two weekends in the following nine days but also Chinese Lantern Festival and Navam Full Moon Festival in Sri Lanka. By virtue of these festivals, the China Cultural Week committed itself to presenting Chinese culture and bringing people in Sri Lanka a happy festival.
Dumpling and sweet dumpling-making have gained much popularity among people. Several overseas Chinese women residing and working in Sri Lanka turned different stuffing into exquisite dumplings with their clever hands, and invited the audience to have a taste of them. With the lead of the host, the audience finally articulated the Chinese praise of “Jaozi!Haochi(delicious dumplings)”
Two Chinese calligraphers were seated everyday to accommodate the local residents so that they could closely observe how the plum blossom, cymbidium, bamboo, chrysanthemum, lotus flower and peony were vividly created on the fans.
A Sri Lankan student who has engaged in Chinese cultural exchanges for many times said that the similar activities are expected to be held in Colombo.
It is said that China Cultural Week activities spontaneously organized by local Chinese were vigorously supported by Chinese Embassy to Sri Lanka, China Cultural Center in Sri Lanka, Association of Overseas Chinese in Sri Lanka and Chinese Service Center.
